Elementary (1-6th Level)

Monday – Friday: 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM

The Elementary Program guides students from their Montessori foundation through an innovative educational experience using a full range of Lower Elementary Montessori materials. The Montessori elementary curriculum builds on the preschool curriculum and inspires students to become independent thinkers. A Montessori elementary classroom may look quite different than a Montessori preschool environment as students reach the second plane of development and become more social.

For children ages 6-12, the elementary curriculum includes language, math, geometry, physical geography, cultural geography, history, botany, zoology, matter, and astronomy. The classroom work frequently involves research, discussion, and large-scale projects.

Integrated studies provide students with unique and age-appropriate materials that help them to become accountable for their use of time, for accuracy in their work, and to evaluate their strengths and areas of growth. Our students have individualized work plans to allow them to use time effectively and to make appropriate choices.

Students take on the responsibility for their learning. They become self-directed and self-initiating in their learning and discover that their curiosity can drive their learning. The habits for a life-long learner are laid down early in Montessori education.

The students are encouraged to begin to think of the world outside our classroom walls and its special place in them. The individually paced curriculum challenges children academically and safeguards their well-being and sense of self. Engaging as contributing members of a respectful community, they learn to question, think critically, and take responsibility for their own learning—skills that will support them in later education and in life.

As at all Montessori levels, the Elementary program is based on the belief that children learn best through movement and work with their hands, and provides cognitive, social, and emotional support to help them reach their full potential.

All students follow the Beddow School dress code, bring their own lunch and fresh fruit/vegetable snacks from home, and may purchase special school lunch on designated days. The elementary students go out for recess at least once a day.

Who We Are

Helping our students develop excellent academic skills, a thirst for knowledge, a strong moral character, and a sense of responsibility for their own education.

The Montessori Method is now over 100 years old. Does that mean that it’s “old”? Absolutely not! The Montessori Method has thrived and grown over the years because it is strong, is being proven by modern neuroscience, and is even more relevant today than it was at the turn of the 20th century. The Beddow School is unique because we are able to find the balance between an authentic Montessori program and life in the modern world. The Beddow Montessori Schools do not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, or national origin.

Tours are available on Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 10:30 am.

  • Tell me more about your school.

The Beddow School is a private, non-sectarian school for children from 2½ years of age through age 12. Our philosophy is based on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori. Students must be 2½ years of age by September 1 in order to be considered for the primary level classes, and 5 years of age by September 1 to be considered for the full-day primary classes.

The Primary and Elementary teachers at The Beddow School are trained Montessorians. They hold Montessori diplomas appropriate to the level they teach in addition to undergraduate or graduate degrees. The support staff includes administrative professionals and classroom aides.

The curriculums for the primary and elementary classes emphasize a phonetic approach in language development and a concrete approach in mathematics, social studies, and science. The half-day primary class is for students aged 5 and under and meets from 8:30 a.m. – noon. The full-day primary classes are for students who have reached the age of 5 by September 1st, or age 6. Admission to the full-day primary class is dependent upon readiness and is determined by the teacher and administrative head. School hours for the full-day primary classes and elementary classes are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
